When has Tyrion not used being underestimated to his advantage? It’s a strategy that relies on the Casterly Rock army underestimating the ingenuity of their enemies, which makes it a classic Tyrion strategy. As the episode comes to a close, Tyrion lays out the clever gambit by which he plans to take Casterly Rock-a secret passage he built in the sewers that will enable the Unsullied to circumvent those impenetrable walls. Of the two, any rational viewer would conclude that Tyrion is the superior strategist between his victory in the Battle of Blackwater and his successful counsel of Daenerys, his military mind has been more or less unbeatable. Much later, restored to a seat of power, he took Riverrun for the Lannisters-but bloodlessly. Jaime was routed by Robb Stark and held as a hostage, losing a hand in the process. We’ve spent the entire series hearing about Jaime’s unsurpassed prowess in war-but apart from stabbing a king in the back in the years before Game of Thrones’ story began, he hasn’t actually done that much in the series proper. If the series is going to keep up this pace right up to the finale, it needs to start paring down.Īnd that brings us to the final long-delayed confrontation between two power players: Jaime Lannister and Olenna Tyrell, whose quiet standoff comes after a pair of large-scale battles that close out the episode. There are just ten episodes left in the entire show-the same number of episodes we’d get in a standard season. There’s a reason, after all, that so much fan service has been packed into these three episodes of Season Seven: Game of Thrones is ending, and soon.
But I assume we’ll see this Daenerys-Jon Snow alliance forged in iron before long. So yeah, not a particularly auspicious beginning to this song of ice and fire. Daenerys eventually grants Jon permission to mine the White Walker-killing dragonglass buried at Dragonstone, but only after a lot of prodding from Tyrion, and only because she doesn’t actually care about dragonglass. So instead, Daenerys and Jon argue, with neither side gaining much ground. The White Walkers are walking south, and Cersei is making a series of swift and bloody moves to secure her place on the Iron Throne. But there isn’t any time for Jon and Daenerys to sort out their differences.
